For everyday work in a small team (drafting, summarizing, searching the web, analyzing a document), ChatGPT and Mistral's assistant both do the job, at similar prices on their team plans. ChatGPT has the larger ecosystem. Vibe, the new name of Mistral's Le Chat, is built by a French company and stores your data in the European Union by default. The right choice depends mostly on how sensitive the information your team will put into it is, and on where your customers are.
Who is behind each tool?
ChatGPT, by OpenAI
OpenAI is an American company based in San Francisco. For users in the European Economic Area and Switzerland, the data controller is its subsidiary OpenAI Ireland Limited, in Dublin, and the lead supervisory authority is the Irish Data Protection Commission. OpenAI's European privacy policy states that data may be processed outside the EEA, including in the United States.
Le Chat, now Vibe, by Mistral AI
Mistral AI is a French company headquartered in Paris. In May 2026, its assistant Le Chat was renamed Vibe. The address stays the same (chat.mistral.ai), and accounts, subscriptions and conversations were kept. Vibe has three modes: Vibe Work for multi-step tasks, Vibe Code for developers and Vibe Chat for classic conversation. If you search for "Le Chat Mistral", Vibe is what you will find.
Why jurisdiction matters
A US company remains subject to US law, including access requests from US authorities, even when the data is stored in Europe. For a business based in the United States, that is the normal situation and rarely a concern. It becomes a real criterion in three cases: you work in a regulated sector, you handle personal data of people in the EU or the UK (the GDPR and the UK GDPR then apply), or your customers require in their contracts that their data stay with European providers.

Two details deserve attention. At OpenAI, even after you turn off training on an individual plan, a conversation you rate (thumbs up or down) may be used to improve the models. At Mistral, the settings for the assistant and for the API are separate: turning off training in one does not turn it off in the other.
Answer quality for everyday business tasks
Both assistants write clear English and handle common business tasks well. For a customer email, a product description, meeting minutes or a plain-language summary of a contract, the gap between them is small and depends more on the prompt than on the tool. Public leaderboards change from month to month and rarely measure tasks close to those of a small business, so they are not enough to decide.
The most reliable method is a short trial on your own work. Pick about ten real, non-sensitive tasks, for example three emails to write, two documents to summarize, one market research question and one spreadsheet to analyze. Give both tools the same instructions, then have the person who does that work every day review the answers. In half a day, you will know which one suits your team.
Privacy and GDPR: what a small business should check
What not to paste into a consumer chatbot
On a free or individual plan, your conversations can be used to train the models until you turn that option off. To be safe, keep these out:
- personal data about your customers or employees (contact details, résumés, payroll, sick leave);
- health data or any other special category of data under the GDPR;
- logins, passwords or API keys;
- contracts or documents covered by a confidentiality agreement;
- unpublished financial figures or strategic information.
Moving to a business plan
As soon as several people use the tool for work, a team plan (ChatGPT Business or Vibe Team) brings three useful things: a workspace managed by the company, training settings controlled at the organization level, and contractual terms suited to business use. At OpenAI, data from Business and Enterprise plans is not used for training by default. At Mistral, the admin of a Team plan can turn off training for the whole organization, which is worth doing on the day the account is opened.
The DPA and your obligations
When your employees process personal data of people in the EU or the UK in the tool, the provider acts as a processor under the GDPR. You then need a data processing agreement (DPA). OpenAI offers one for Business, Enterprise and the API. Mistral publishes its own and incorporates it by reference into its contract. Add the tool to your record of processing activities and set a few simple usage rules for the team. No tool makes a company compliant on its behalf: it provides safeguards, and how you use it remains your responsibility.
What if you did not have to choose?
The Mistral vs ChatGPT question assumes a single provider for the whole team. In practice, models improve quickly and each has its strengths: one writes better, another reasons more carefully over a spreadsheet, a third costs less for simple tasks. Switching subscriptions with every new release is not realistic for a small team.
Another approach is a workspace that gives access to several models. That is how Omeon works: it integrates models from Anthropic, Google, Mistral, OpenAI and xAI. Organization admins choose which providers are allowed. They can keep only one, for example Mistral, to limit the organization's AI processing to European models. Each provider is shown with the country of its headquarters. Omeon is hosted in Europe, with its database in France. You will find more details on the About page and in the privacy policy.
FAQ
Does Mistral's Le Chat still exist?
Yes, under another name. Le Chat has been called Vibe since May 2026. The chat.mistral.ai address, accounts and conversations did not change, and the Vibe Chat mode keeps the original conversation experience.
Is Mistral GDPR compliant and ChatGPT not?
It is not that simple. Both providers offer a data processing agreement and plans where your data is not used for training. The difference lies in the default data location (the European Union at Mistral) and in the provider's jurisdiction. Compliance also depends on how you use the tool.
Can we use the free version for work?
For tasks on public content, yes. For information about your customers, your employees or your deals, choose a team plan, with training turned off and a DPA in place.
Is Mistral cheaper than ChatGPT?
On individual plans, yes: $14.99 per month for Mistral Pro, against $20 per month for ChatGPT Plus, as of October 23, 2026. OpenAI also offers ChatGPT Go at $8 per month. On team plans, prices are close: $24.99 per user per month for Vibe Team, and $25 billed monthly or $20 billed annually for ChatGPT Business.
Our recommendation by profile
- Your team mostly works on low-sensitivity content and already relies on many US tools: ChatGPT Business is a solid choice, with a wide range of features and connectors.
- Your customers require European hosting, or you handle sensitive data about people in the EU: Vibe Team, with training turned off by the admin, fits those constraints better.
- You want to use several models while keeping control over which providers are used: a multi-model workspace such as Omeon saves you from having to decide once and for all.
In every case, test both on your own tasks before deciding, and move to a business plan as soon as the tool becomes part of daily work.
